RUST REPAIR & PREVENT

ALWAYS WEAR PPE - P2 dust mask, protective eyewear  are a MUST

Rust can cause extensive damage to metal and it is important to take preventive measures to avoid rust formation. Rust prevention is crucial because it protects the integrity, safety, and longevity of metal structures and objects. Rust weakens metal, leading to potential structural failure, costly repairs, and decreased lifespan. It also impacts the aesthetic appearance and can compromise functionality. Effective rust prevention extends the life of metal and helps to create a barrier between the metal surface and the environment, which protects against corrosion.

For areas with rust, thorough removal is crucial. This often involves sanding to remove as much rust as possible, followed by treatment with a rust converter and further sanding to prepare the surface for filler.

PREPARE THE SURFACE

  • Wash the rusted area with soap & water to remove any dirt or loose debris - allow to thoroughly dry
  • Remove as much rust as possible using
    • wire brush - Use a wire brush or steel wool to scrub away loose rust and scale.
    • sandpaper - For heavier rust, use coarse-grit sandpaper and gradually move to finer grits for a smoother finish.
    • grinder or drill attachment For larger areas or stubborn rust can be more efficient.
  • Clean the surface with Wax & Grease remover
  • Mask off the surrounding area to prevent from damage or any overspray

APPLICATION

  • Choose the right product: Select a rust converter suitable for your specific application and follow the manufacturer's instructions
  • Apply the rust converter evenly with a brush or spray, ensuring all rusted areas are covered. Allow it to dry and react (indicated by a colour change, usually to blue-black)

CURE & FINISH

Cure time: Allow the rust converter to dry and cure completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. This can take anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours or more, depending on the product and ambient conditions.

FILL, PRIME  & PAINT

Once the rust converter has cured - If the rust has created any holes or pits you will need to fill them with body filler. and then apply a rust resistant Etch primer

Here's why rust prevention is important:

Extends lifespan:
Rust prevention methods, like protective coatings and regular cleaning, shield metal from environmental factors that cause corrosion, thus extending the lifespan of equipment and structures.
Prevents structural damage:
Rust weakens metal, potentially leading to structural failure and safety hazards. Preventing rust helps maintain the structural integrity of machinery, vehicles, and buildings.
Reduces maintenance costs:
Addressing rust early on is much more cost-effective than dealing with the consequences of extensive rust damage. Preventing rust can significantly reduce the need for repairs, replacements, and downtime.
Maintains functionality:
Rust can hinder the proper functioning of machinery, tools, and other metal objects. Rust prevention ensures that these items continue to operate as intended.
Preserves appearance:
Rust can be unsightly and detract from the appearance of metal objects. Rust prevention helps maintain the aesthetic appeal of items like vehicles and decorative metalwork.
Enhances safety:
In situations like vehicle maintenance or construction, rust can pose serious safety risks. Preventing rust is vital for ensuring the safety of individuals working with or around metal structures.
